Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts Review In Few Words (Mini Review).
Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts, or Baka to test in short, is one more anime for the enjoyment. It features how anime can take anything and makes it looks fun, even exams, something many of us truly hate, and it does that well.
Baka and Test can also be very appealing to those who likes comedy as well. If you want to know if Baka and Test is for you, I advise you to watch the first episode to decide how good it is for you.
Good things about Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts
- Hideyoshi, the best guy in Anime.
- Very enjoyable & crazy anime.
Possibly bad things Baka & Test: Summon the Beasts
- None so far.
Story
Fumizuki high school uses a new & unique education system. A system where students get placed in their classes based on their score in a placement exam.
Students are placed in classes A to F. On the top of everything, we have class A, which is for students with top-grades. Which is why it has the best accommodations out there, like reclining chairs, laptops, free snacks & air conditions.
On the other hand, class F is totally the opposite, it is a rundown class, with small tables that get broken very easily, and where the teacher will tell to just bear with it. The other classes are in-between these two classes. Just one look on the signs of each class gives you an idea of how much different they are.

It is easy to see the differences between the classes from A to F makes it abvious how different these classes are.
But students are not destined to stay in their classes forever. Any class can simply challenge one of the upper class to ESB battle, which is a short for Exam Summoning Battle, and if they won, they get to swap classes with the losing team. So if a class like class F beat Class A, they will get all their amenities.
These battles involve using a summoned creatures that are a chibi version of their summoner. The health of each of these creatures matches the last exam score the summoner scored, which encourage students to score higher in classes, or else they won’t be able to beat the stronger classes.
The battles themselves are very similar to RPG games battles, in fact, the whole concept of ESB is like a big game, which definitely seems better than the tests we have in schools nowadays. :D
During the placement exam, our protagonist, Yoshii Akihisa, had to save a girl who were sick, and so had to leave the exam, which resulted in them both getting zero, and that mean getting placed in class F, the lowest class possible.
Since class F has nothing to loss, Akihisa & his friend & class representative, Yuuji Sakamoto, decided to declare a war on the upper class to get to the top.
Besides the fun settings, class F has all sort of characters, like the love triangle, the trap boy, the pervert ninja, the tomboy girl, the dumb beauty, the strategist who can beat stronger classes with his tactics. And the “baka” protagonist.
The Art
The art of Baka and Test is definitely good, both for its time and compared to the art we see today in anime. There are many times where they use colored patterned for the characters shadow. These patterned shadows are used in many of the places during the anime, and it is what sets the art apart from many other anime. If you are into school uniforms in Anime, the school uniform for both males and females looks very elegant.
Pacing & Enjoyment
Baka and Test is a highly enjoyable anime, if I remember correctly, it was around the time it was aired that anime started to be made just for the sake to be enjoyed. At least the way it is done today.
During the fights, there are some transformation sequence, they are not something as elaborate as Mahou Shoujo Anime for the most part, but they are good nonetheless.

Transformation Scene Of Minami
The pacing of Baka and Test is good, but it could have been faster, the anime takes its time to proceeds with the story, but in return, it shows you tons of good characters interaction during that, so it wasn’t really that bad.
Based on the anime pacing, if you want to know if Baka and Test is for you, I advise you to watch the first episode to decide how suitable it is for you.
Characters
Yoshii Akihisa
The main protagonist of Baka and Test, and the one meant by “baka” in the anime name. Since he is a first-class fool, it is unlikely you will ever find a fool in this world that matches his foolishness. XD
Akihisa likes Himeji, the pink-haired girl in his class, but she doesn’t seem to know about his feelings.
Yoshii Akihisa is voiced by Shimono Hiro.
Sakamoto Yuuji
Class F representative & Akihisa’s friend. Despite being in Class F, he is a smart guy & strategist, and the one that puts out plans in order to defeat the stronger classes.
Sakamoto Yuuji is voiced by Suzuki Tatsuhisa.
Himeji Mizuki
The girl Yoshii helped during the placement exam, since she got zero in the exam, she was placed in class F, along with Yushii & Yuuji.
Himeji & Yoshii knew each other since elementary school days, and seems to have feelings for him as he does for her.
Himeji Mizuki is voiced by Harada Hitomi.
Kinoshita Hideyoshi
A boy who looks very girly, to the degree that many people, including the girls in the school, treat him as one, despite him reminding others that he is actually a guy.
Hideyoshi is a very popular character in Baka and Test, and is alone can be a reason to watch the anime, as he is a character you probably should not miss.
Kinoshita Hideyoshi is voiced by Katou Emiri.
Shimada Minami
The tomboyish & tsundere girl in class F, She is a Japanese who was born and lived in Germany. While Minami speaks Japanese correctly, she still struggles with Kanji, which is one of the reasons she got the low scores that placed her in class F.
Despite being violent toward Akihisa, she likes him so much.
Shimada Minami is voiced by Mizuhashi Kaori.
Tsuchiya Kouta
The ninja pervert of class F, he has a camera with him all the time, and there are many times where he tries to take a peek at girls panties during some of the class incidents. His summoned monster also uses a camera as a weapon.
Tsuchiya Kouta is voiced by Miyata Kouki.
Other characters
Some of the other characters in Baka and Test are Kirishima Shouko, the girl with the top grades in class A & Kinoshita Yuuko, Hideyoshi’s twin sister, who is also from class A.
Extra Few Things
The opening song
Colorful is the best word I could use to describe Baka and Test opening, which is fast-paced and fun to watch. The opening song itself, “Perfect-area complete!” by Natsuko Asou, was stuck in my head for a long time after I finished watching the anime.
Baka and Test Blu-ray
Baka and Test Blu-ray contains 3 disc, which contains the Japanese voices, English dubs, as well as English subtitles.
Second Season.
Like many successful anime, there is a second season for Baka and Test, which was aired under the name Baka and Test – Summon the Beasts 2 (or Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! in Japanese). The second season is a continuation of the first one, and while I recommend to anyone who liked the first season to watch it, bear in mind it was not as good as the first reason, as not much happen in it when it comes to the story.
And Finally
Like I kept saying, Baka and Test is an excellent comedy, with tons of enjoyment in watching it. The idea that test can be turned into RPG-like fights may not be applicable in our world, but that doesn’t really matter as it does apply in the anime world. ^^
I hope you liked my Baka And Test review, and see you again in another review. ^^
