Wacom Cintiq 27QHD Review In Few Words (Mini Review)

Cintiq 27QHD is a really big Cintiq model from Wacom, which features a new sleek design, and a new innovative remote with many express keys & 5 USB Ports. It also supports many types of display ports, either directly, or through one of the adapters that come with it, which makes it compatible with many sorts of monitors, something that some of the other Cintiq models didn’t have (not without buying an additional adapter or something). The big size & the high resolution makes it a good option for creating detailed drawings. The only downside to the big size of it comes in case you don’t have a room for it.

Just keep in mind that while Cintiq 27QHD has a very good hardware, Cintiq 27QHD had some annoying driver problems a while ago, some other glitches that makes me a bit hesitant to recommend it to anyone, especially when it comes to the touch version, but since many of these problems are mostly solved, I think it is much safer to get one now.

• Has sleek screen, which makes it similar to a giant iPad from Apple.
• Has no fans, which makes it very quiet.
• The screen has a high resolution of 2560 X 1440 (when connecting it to displayport only).
• Comes with a new Expresskey, which contains many customizable keys. You can either attached the remote to the side, or hold in your hand.
• Very big & spacious.
• Gives you more value than the Cintiq 24HD, as it is lighter than it and with similar size.
• Lighter than the Cintiq 24HD.
• Compatible with both HDMI and mini displayport.
• Comes with additional adapters, which makes it compatible with more computers out of the box (some other Cintiq models required you to buy additional adapters).
• Has 5 USB ports.

Cons

• Despite the improvements in the newer versions of the driver, you are still possible to have driver problems even now.
• The touch doesn’t always work, something that’s explained in the video below.
• Unlike the previous models, Cintiq 27QHD doesn’t come with a decent stand out of the box.

Wacom Cintiq 27QHD review:- Quick Look

The Cintiq 27 QHD looks very elegant, the screen surface features an edge-to-edge glass design, which makes it look like as if it was an Apple product. This beautiful design It makes the Cintiq 27QHD very tempting to get, besides how it provides a close & convenient way to draw the same way you do on paper

The Cintiq 27 QHD is fanless, which makes it very quiet, just like the Cintiq 24HD, the model that came before it.

Since the Cintiq 27QHD is quite big, it is probably not feasible to place it on your lap to draw with it (unless you got yourself a monitor arm, something I will get to soon). Despite having a large screen, this Cintiq is close to the size to the Cintiq 24HD, but it is lighter.

Wacom Cintiq 27QHD review:- The Screen

Cintiq 27QHD has a AHVA LCD panel, which is a type of IPS panels, this panel is what makes the screen looks very gorgeous. The viewing angles of the screen are ±89°, which is typical of Ahva displays. These are the same viewing angles of the previous Cintiq model, Cintiq 24HD.

When it comes to the resolution, Cintiq 27QHD’s screen has QHD resolution, which stands for Quad-HD, a higher resolution than the standard HD resolution, which is 1920 X 1080. To be exact, Cintiq 27QHD resolution is 2560 X 1440, exactly the same resolution of the 27-inch iMac screen. It is an excellent resolution for working with graphics, but it is not great for reading text unless your eyes are close to the screen or you enlarged the text you are reading (It is not like you people use the Citniq to read on it for the most part XD). Bear in mind that to get the full resolution, you will have to connect your Cintiq to your computer via display port, as the HDMI port is only limited to 1980 X 1080.

The large 27-inches screen of the Cintiq 27QHD allows for a more precise drawing, it is kinda like drawing on a bigger sheet of paper in traditional drawing terms. That may not be useful for some artists who prefer to draw in a smaller area, but it is a great for us who want it.

Cintiq 27QHD screen connect to your computer via HDMI or Displayport, it also comes with both HDMI & Mini adapters, which mean you are less likely have to get an adapter to use your Cintiq.

So in short , Cintiq 27QHD screen is much better than the Cintiq 24HD.

Standard Drawing Features

When it comes to standard drawing features, Cintiq 27QHD has nothing new to provide, it still comes with 2048 level of pressure sensitivity, which is the regular pressure in all Wacom professional tablets since the Intuos4. And it still features the same 5080 lpi resolution of the previous Cintiq model.

Arm & Stand

Cintiq 27QHD comes with a standard stand, which allows Cintiq 27QHD to be lied down close to flat, but it is barely adjustable beyond that, if you like to lean toward your table while you draw, then the standard stand is fine, but besides that, you will need to buy another stand that suits your needs, and there are two options for you there.

To mount your Cintiq, you can either get the optional Ergo stand from Wacom, or to get an Ergotron LX arm, here are an explanation of both options:-

Ergotron Arm

There are two advantages of getting an Ergotron Arm for your Cintiq, one, it allows you to move your Cintiq around, and even rotate it as a whole, which is good in case you tend to rotate your drawings alot. It is also good option in case you want to place the Cintiq 27QHD on your arm and draw with it.

The second advantage of Ergotron arms is their price, these arms tend to come much cheaper than the stand that Wacom sells.

The Ergo Stand From Wacom

Here is what Wacom says about their optional Ergo stand:-

“The Cintiq Ergo Stand offers a range of ergonomic options for the natural feel of working on an easel or drafting table. The ergonomically designed, counterweighted stand allows you to quickly and effortlessly adjust the incline and height of the display to your favorite working position. Place it at the edge of your desk or work while standing, whatever is most comfortable for you. It’s designed for both Cintiq 27QHD creative pen displays, model numbers DTK2700 and DTH2700.”

Once you mount stand, which is done by removing the 3 lids behind the Cintiq & screwing the stand, you will be able to rotate your Cintiq in more than a position, the Ergo stand looks elegant and works fairly well, though it isn’t as much flexible as the Ergotron arm, and it is much more expensive, so I would only recommend it if it suits the way you already sit down and work with you artworks.

I think the Ergo stand from Wacom could have been a fairly nice option if it was not so expensive.

Wacom Cintiq 27QHD review:- The New Cintiq Remote

One of the most innovative features of Cintiq 27QHD is the new ExpressKey remote, which replaces the express keys that used to come on the side of the previous Cintiq models. You can hold the remote on your hand, which is especially nice if you tend to change the way you sit from time to time, or attach it to the side of the Cintiq by magnets and work like you did with the older Cintiq models. The remote is kinda similar to having a Rezer gaming keypad or something, if you used that. The remote makes it easier to anyone to use the Cintiq, whether they are right-handed or left-handed.

The ExpressKey remote has 17 Customizable buttons & a touch-ring with 3 modes Which mean you can get rid of the keyboard if you don’t use so many keyboard shortcuts, unless you tend to use too much keyboard shortcuts, or need to have the keyboard besides you to rename layers or things like that. (Note that Wacom has its own small keyboard for that, but so far, I don’t see any difference between using it instead of any small Bluetooth keyboard you already have).

The touch ring allows you to toggle between 3 incremental functions. like changing the brush size or zooming it, the button at the middle of the ring toggles between these 3 modes.

The remote takes about to 2 hours to fully charge, via USB, and it lasts for 160 hours according to Wacom. Please note that the rechargable batteries inside the remote can’t be changed.

Connecting Cintiq 27QHD With Your PC Or Mac

Along with Cintiq 27QHD, a DVI-D to HDMI adapter and a Mini Displayport to Displayport adapter are included, which mean you will be able to connect your Cintiq to many computers without the need to buy additional adapters, unlike some of the other Cintiq models, like the Cintiq 13HD, which requires you to get an adapter in case you don’t have a HDMI port. Bear in mind You need to connect Cintiq 27QHD using the display port in order to get the full 2560 X 1440 resolution, otherwise, you will get the standard HD resolution of 1920 X 1080.

The Touch Version:- Cintiq 27QHD Touch

The Touch model is called Cintiq 27QHD touch. Which supports the traditional touch gestures, like pinch-to-zoom & panning. If you didn’t need touch at any point of time, there is a dedicated button for turning the touch on & off.

To make it easier to work without the need to reach out for your keyboard, there is on-screen keyboard, which you can resize to fit into your digital workspace.

While touch can be an appealing productivity feature, bear in mind that in this Cintiq model, it is totally not perfect, the following video shows you some software problems in it, like how the touch doesn’t work until you tap the screen with your pen.

Since many of these problems are in the software, and not in the Cintiq itself, many of them may get solved in the future. Despite that, I find it kind of a gamble to pay a few hundreds extra for something you are not sure if it will actually works.

Cintiq 27QHD Review:- Accessories

• Color manager:- Made by X-Rite, this optional accessory allows you to calibrate the colors of your Cintiq, something that is useful if you have a system with multiple displays, or if you plan to share the final work to customers or the likes. Generally speaking. While you can calibrate your Cintiq without the need of this accessory, knowing that such option exist may help you someday.
• Bluetooth keyboard:- Waocm has its own small Bluetooth keyboard, which is easier to place close to you where it getting in the way. I personally don’t see anything remarkable about getting this keyboard instead of getting any other wireless keyboard.

Wacom Cintiq 27QHD review:- Possible Problems

There are some software & hardware problems that happened with Cintiq 27QHD, many of these problems come from the driver software, which have been mostly solved by now. Some of the other problems are hardware problems, like dead or red pixels. I will mostly focus on the software problems in the list below, as I can’t offer any solution to hardware problems.

Note:- If you have Cintiq 27QHD and experienced some problems with it, please feel free to share them with me, so that I add them to the list below.

• There are times where you will face lag in the ExpressKey remote, which is probably caused by the USB 3 interfering with the Bluetooth. A simple solution to this problem is to connect the Cintiq to your computer using USB 2 instead of USB 3. To know which USB cable are you using, USB 3 cables are usually blue, while USB 2 cable is grey. Take a look at the following picture to see where the color is:-

• If you work with a system with multiple monitors, another possible problem with touch is how it can go to the other monitors on your system, instead of the Cintiq monitor itself, this may be solved by changing the display port you connect the Cintiq to in your graphics card.

And Finally

Cintiq 27QHD is a great & innovative pen display, its screen looks gorgeous, and it won’t fail to impress you the moment you unbox it. But you have to be a little bit ready for some possible driver problems if you decided to get it, there is a chance you won’t run into any problem, but it is better to know about them rather than be surprised to have them all of sudden.
