Want To Learn Photoshop? Time To See How Much Time You Need For That

Photoshop is a vast program, with multiple industries revolving around it. It is a program that can help you edit, fix or manipulate your photos, as well as creating designs & paintings from scratch. So it is no wonder that many people would want to learn it, even when they are not going to use it to make living.

Since Photoshop may seem intimidating & complex to learn at first, one of the most common questions people tend to ask when they learn it is:- How much does it take to learn Photoshop?

While there is no accurate answer to this question, as that depends on you, and how much fast you learn, and what you are trying to achieve with it. There are many common estimates on that, Especially when it comes to the basics. I will visit these estimates later in this article. But there are few thing I want to clarify before I give them to you.

Achieving Results With Photoshop With The Basics

You can achieve results with Photoshop very quickly by learning the basic tools, which allows you to do things from changing some of the colors in a picture, to completely remove an object from your picture. It is nice to know that you don’t need to spend tens of hours in order to remove that unwanted dog from one of your pictures. This comes as a revelation for those who thought it would be difficult to do anything with Photoshop without taking a course or something.

Generally speaking, you can learn to use any of Photoshop tools within an hour or so, each tool you learn allows you to do one more thing you could not do before.

Some other concepts, like adjusting the color of a photo, can be learned in a much shorter time. While some others, like the selection tools, may take 1-3 hours, depending on how deep you go into it. To an extent, each tool you learn is kinda like a block you could obtain to build your skills. I even wrote my Photoshop book “Learn Photoshop CC With Pictures” to take advantage of that, so that even if you read a portion of it, you will still be able to use it to do things with the program.

A Lifetime Of Practice

After learning all the main Photoshop features, it is time to practice using it, which is done by either creating designs or manipulating photos. It all comes down to what you wanted to learn Photoshop for. Taking requests from people you know can greatly help you there, as you will be asked to do things you have not expected.

You can also expand what you know via tutorials and experiencing different things. The more you do that, the better. This process can be a lifelong one, and it only stops the moment you stop learning. It totally comes down to how much good you want to be, as many people don’t need to learn beyond a certain level.

Experiencing Is Crucial

Many Photoshop tools, like the blending tools, which is a way to add effects to objects, require some experiencing with them. Again, the more you do that, the more you will be able to understand these tools, no matter how little sense they made to you when you learned them, it is all about gaining the feel of how they work. That goes for the other seemingly confusing aspects of Photoshop as well, like blending colors using the brush tool.

It Is Never A Waste Of Time

As long as you use a computer, you are very likely going to benefit from a lot from learning Photoshop later on, and in more than a way. To speak of myself, I learned Photoshop years ago, mainly because I wanted to have fun with pictures, but ended up using it for tons of things, from the banners & images used in this Website, to creating artworks from scratch.

They say it takes 10,000 to master something, while I don’t think that rule is wrong, it tends to scare people from learning things at times. Spending 10-30 hours learning Photoshop will allow you to make tons of things. Sure, it won’t make you professional or anything like that really, but it will add the skill to help you do things you wouldn’t have been able to before.

A Little Advice:- Try Not To Learn Everything There Is In It

There are tons of futures in Photoshop, and more than way to achieve the same results. Learning everything can take years, if not forever, and chances that you really won’t use everything there is. While learning everything sounds nice and all, I pretty much advise you to focus on getting results, while learning more about the other aspects of using Photoshop that you may need at a later time.

What Is Better For Learning, Tutorials Or Books?

This is a tricky question, as it totally depends on your preference. Both tutorials & books can teach you Photoshop very well in my opinion, the advantage of books is that they tend to be organized to teach you things in order. They act like a course you could simply follow, and once you are done, you have grasped many of the features covered in it. And books tend to not cost that much at the end.

Tutorials, on the other hand, are completely free, there are tons of tutorials out there that cover all sorts of aspects of the program, some tutorials have the same advantage of books, in that they come in a series to teach you things.

A possible problem with tutorials is that, depending on the tutorials you pick, you may end up having some gaps in your knowledge, these gaps can be filled by finding other tutorials related to the areas you lack. Which is fine in case you are fine with going back to the learning table for some time.

One interesting way to learn Photoshop is to combine both, you can get yourself a book to learn all the basic of it, plus a few other things. Then as you practice the skills you gained, you could watch or read tutorials to broaden the knowledge you have. But like I said above, it all depends on what suits you at the end.

Again, how long does it take to learn Photoshop?

Now I have covered the aspects related to this question. It is time to give some estimates on how much time to dedicate to it to achieve results, depending on your learning speed, the actual numbers may vary:-

    • It takes about 5 hours to learn the very basics of Photoshop.
    • And about 20-30 form start to finish to be able to do most of the things you see people do on the Internet, from creating banners, to manipulating images, to changing the colors of your picture, or removing an unwanted object from it.
    • If you spent 50-100 hours with Photoshop, with the proper practice, you will be able to create some very neat design.
    • After that, it is a long journey of becoming great at using it.

100+ hours may seem intimidating, but it really is not. because they will be acumulate with time, so it is unlikely you are going to feel it.

How My Book Is Organized To Help You Achieve Things Faster

When I wrote my book, Learn Photoshop CC With Pictures, I made sure it teach you the tools that will help you start using the program as soon as possible. From the very second chapter, you will learn how to use the brush tool, and then you will learn how to do more with it in the chapters after it. Then you will learn selection tools & layers. And then the books will continue to expand on that a bit by bit, each chapter constitute a learning block you could use on its own. To make the learning process easier, there are pictures all over the book to help you with that.

If you think that Photoshop is scary or intimidating, you won’t feel that with my books, as it will spoon-feed you the concepts one by one.

And Finally

I really hope that my article has answered your answer. While there is no %100 accurate estimation on how long does it take to learn Photoshop, as that totally depends on the person doing it.
